The brook stickleback is a nest building species. 19 May 2006 During the breeding season, males of the three-spined stickleback occupy a territory in which they build a tunnel-shaped nest.

The male then defends the nest from other fish until the young hatch up to four weeks later. The three-spined stickleback is the fish that is most likely to be caught when pond-dipping. The three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) is a fish native to most inland and coastal waters north of 30°N.

Depending on the species, his colour ranges from red to yellow-orange to black. After building a nest of plant materials glued together by threadlike, mucous secretions from his kidneys, the male coaxes and drives a female into the nest to lay her eggs. He then follows her into the nest to fertilize the eggs. Scientific name: Gasterosteus aculaeatus A diminutive but aggressive predator, the three-spined stickleback hunts tadpoles and small fish.
Widely but locally distributed throughout the UK and along the Atlantic coast of North America, it is also found in many northern and eastern European countries, in Greenland and in Turkey, and in the Far East. 1992-10-01 · Anita. The male then entices a female to enter the nest and deposit her eggs for him to fertilize. When the nest is full, the male becomes its guard and caretaker; by fanning the eggs with his pectoral fins, he aerates them until they hatch, and he aggressively defends the eggs and any young from intruders. Parental care is given by the males in all but the white stickleback (Gasterosteus species). Ninespine Stickleback do not regularly experience nocturnal hypoxia in their natural environments, and therefore, have slower and decreased control of their swim-bladder lift.

Fish in this species are anadramous, living in the ocean but entering brackish water or ascending freshwater streams to spawn. The male threespine stickleback not only builds the nest, he also guards it, takes care of the eggs, and protects the newly hatched larvae. The Stickleback has a wide area of natural distribution, occurring in most inland coastal waters within the northern hemisphere. Here, they are found in a variety of shallow, heavily vegetated freshwater and brackish environments, including lakes, rivers, streams, and estuaries over muddy or sandy substrates. Indeed, nest depth was a much stronger predictor of male mating success than more commonly studied targets of sexual selection in stickleback (size, condition, shape, color, infection status). This selection on nest depth means that variance in fitness changed predictably across microhabitats, altering the opportunity for sexual selection to act on other traits.
Look for it in ponds, lakes and rivers. The nest when completed is a comparatively elaborate structure usually attached to reeds or some other suitable foundation.
