Human rights law can take many different forms, including international law, regional law, statutes of individual countries, and case decisions by the courts. What are human rights? Course in International Human Rights Law: This course examines the substantial body of human rights law that has emerged in the last sixty years, following the foundational 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It covers international and regional human rights treaties, organizations, and bodies, including courts and tribunals. Human rights in the United States comprise a series of rights which are legally protected by the Constitution of the United States (particularly the Bill of Rights), state constitutions, treaty and customary international law, legislation enacted by Congress and state legislatures, and state referenda and citizen's initiatives. On Oct. 6, 2005 the Human Rights Law was expanded to become the only human rights law in New York State to prohibit discrimination in both employment and housing against victims of domestic violence, sexual abuse and stalking. 1.
